An additive loss ledger with a visible reserve

Available equipment budget is transmitter minimum power minus receiver sensitivity. Passive loss is the sum of every line item. The design margin subtracts your selected engineering reserve from the raw power margin.

Design margin = (Tx minimum − Rx sensitivity) − passive loss − reserve

A positive planning margin is not a commissioning result. Confirm the actual optics, route, connectors and test records before ordering or accepting a link.

  • It does not calculate dispersion, return loss, receiver overload, amplification or bidirectional asymmetry.
  • It does not replace OTDR, insertion-loss or acceptance testing.
  • Generic planning values are editable starting points; confirm the exact product and installed configuration.

Subtract receiver sensitivity from transmitter minimum power to find the available equipment budget. Subtract fiber attenuation, connections, splices, splitters and other passive loss, then subtract a project reserve to show the design margin.

What engineering reserve should I use?

This tool starts with an editable 3 dB reserve as a practical planning convention. Your specification, installed environment and maintenance policy may require a different value.

Does a pass result approve my fiber link?

No. A pass is a planning conclusion from the inputs you supplied. Confirm exact optics, product loss, route conditions and measured acceptance results with the responsible engineer.
