Common fiber cable selection mistakes
- Starting with fiber count. Count matters, but the route and construction decide whether the cable survives the installation.
- Calling every armored cable direct-burial cable. Moisture barriers, jacket construction and crush protection must suit soil exposure.
- Ignoring metal restrictions. Lightning-prone and EMI-sensitive routes may need an all-dielectric strength member and armor system.
- Treating company certificates as universal SKU certificates. Match the exact model, jacket and declared scope to the destination market.
- Buying the lowest first cost without an installation plan. Pulling, splicing, attachment hardware and future capacity often determine total project cost.

How do I choose between indoor and outdoor fiber optic cable?
Start with the installation environment. Indoor cable prioritizes fire-rated jackets and flexible premises structures. Outdoor cable adds water, UV and mechanical protection for duct, aerial or buried routes. A transition point may require both cable types or a rated indoor/outdoor design.
Should fiber cable be installed in a duct or direct buried?
Duct installation improves access and future replacement, while direct-buried cable needs construction designed for soil moisture, crush and possible rodent exposure. Do not treat a standard duct cable as direct-burial cable unless its exact construction is approved for that use.
When is an all-dielectric cable needed?
All-dielectric construction is useful near power infrastructure, in lightning-prone areas or anywhere metallic strength members and armor are restricted. The route, pulling load and required mechanical protection still need engineering confirmation.
Which FTTH drop cable works for an aerial connection?
